Patients and Families What is cardioversion?Cardioversion is a procedure in which the heart is given a brief electrical shock to change an abnormal heart rhythm into a normal rhythm. In non-emergency situations, a cardioversion is performed to treat arrhythmias originating in the atria. In emergency situations, cardioversion is used to correct an arrhythmia associated with faintness, low blood pressure, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness. Cardioversion is a safe and effective treatment to restore normal heart rhythm. |
